Chamoli is reputed for its shrines and temples and birth place of 'Chipko Movement '. Chamoli proved itself the most spectacular in its natural assets; be it maintain scenery, valley aspects, water-edges, floristic varieties, dramatic landform or the climatic cardinalities. Chamoli the land of forts, lies in the arms of the heavenly Himalayas which seems to be a benediction of earth. A blessed spot, the place seems to have been particularly dear to Lord Shiva. The district is studded with major pilgrim centres like Badrinath, Joshimath and Hemkund Sahib, snow-clad peaks and exceptional natural beauty. Badrinath, one of the most important pilgrim centres of the country, is a part of sacred 'Char Dhams' of the State and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. "Tapt Kund", the holy hot water spring is located in front of the Badrinath temple at the bank of Alaknanda River. Hemkund Sahib is one of the most important Sikh pilgrim centres. It is believed that Guru Govind Singh Ji, the tenth Guru of the Sikhs, meditated over here. Valley of Flowers the ‘paradise’ of nature lovers, discovered by Frank Symthe along with R.L. Holdsworth, is exceptionally rich in floral wealth. In fact the valley has the largest collection of wild flowers species. According to mythological legends, Lord Hanuman visited the valley to collect ‘Sanjeevani’.
